Pleased to meet you. My name is Radina Valova. When I’m not lawyering* (energy & climate law), I tell visual stories and write supernatural and contemporary adult thrillers: screenplays, short fiction, novels.

Here, you’ll find my writing exploits (fiction and non-fiction), visual portfolio (photography for now; first film project coming soon), tips on the craft and business of writing and film, and book and movie reviews.

Words have always been a refuge. I have been an avid reader for most of my life, and I realized in middle school that I wanted to tell stories that move people, just like the books that moved me. From the moment I picked up the pen – and later, the camera – I knew I would make storytelling a part of my journey, no matter what direction life might take me in. Every day teaches me something new about the craft of writing, how to work with light and composition, and, most importantly, how to be patient and stay the course, even when the going gets tough.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  1. If you want to be a writer or photographer or filmmaker (or anything, really), show up and do it. Every day. Even if you only have 20 minutes. Inspiration waits for no one.
  2. If you want to be a good writer / photographer / filmmaker / what-have-you, read books and screenplays and short stories, watch movies, and absorb as much visual inspiration as you can. Every day. Even if you only have 20 minutes. You’ll learn what you love and what doesn’t work for you.
  3. Create for an audience of one: you. There is no external motivator more powerful than the passion and joy of putting pen to paper or looking through that viewfinder and seeing what comes out. If you create for anything other than your own passion – praise, renown, money, all the usual temptations – the fire will burn out.

Obligatory social media plugs: Instagram (assuaging my visual storytelling obsession). Twitter (proud member of @WriteFightGifClub and host of the Thursday #PhotoStoryPrompt, sharing writing tips, motivation, and flash fiction).

Don’t be shy – I’d love to hear from you on writing, film, photography, life, fandoms (Supernatural is my jam but all are welcome here; I don’t judge), and any other epic questions or issues you’d like to discuss.
